It's Australian Open Time! One of my fav times here in Melbourne Australia. The energy in the city is buzzing with excitement and awesomeness! And of course, like any trader I am constantly thinking about how to improve and what I can learn from the 0.01 % top in the world!
Market Wizard Linda Raschke not only loves trading, she also loves playing tennis; so of course we had plenty to chat about the Australian Open 2025! Linda is a competitive tennis player herself, so I had to ask her: "What are the parallels to trading and what can we traders learn from top tennis players?"
Here is what Linda said:
1) Jannick Sinner won the Australian Open in 2024 and is currently world No 1. He turned PRO at age 16 but it still took him another 8 years to win his first grand slam title. Most of the pro tennis players started playing between the ages of 4 - 7 so first thing, it took them a long long time, many years of playing before they were able to win a major title!
So
🌟 have LOTS of patience and never lose sight of your big goal!"
2) Jannick was one of very few Italians to win a grand Slam title, and the first Italian to win the Australian Open.
So:
🌟 Because it has not been done before does not mean that it can't be done!
🌟 Their lives tend to be total immersion in tennis. Diet, fitness, mental coaches, business agents who handle all outside responsibilities.
Eliminate as many outside distractions as possible and have a laser like focus keeping your eyes on the price!
3) Jannick LOST the first two sets off his final. (It is best of 5). But sat tight and came back to win the last 3!!
So:
🌟 Stay calm under pressure and stick to your strengths - in his case, endurance and tenacity.
4) Regarding top tennis - most matches are seldom a wipeout but instead, can be very close.
A player may just win 52% of the points played. The same can be said of many professional sports. Top Golfers may only win their tournament by 1 point. Baseball games can go into the ninth inning tied. Basketball will often see two teams playing point for point until the final 3 minutes.
So:
🌟 What makes a tennis player GREAT is that they make fewer unforced errors.
4) Linda: "In my team tennis, the league that I am in, the team who wins is the one who makes the least amount of unforced errors, but that will be the winning strategy as opposed to hitting Winners. In Pro tennis, more matches are won by hitting winners, but this demands a high level of consistency.
With my matches, my partner and I can lose the first set. But then come back to win the next two.
So:
🌟 Just because you are off to what might seem a rough start, does not mean that you cant come back and win. Once you have experienced this, you KNOW that it is always a possibility to come back and win!
🌟 For a trader or an investor, you may have a losing start or losing quarter or rough patch, but in the big timeline, it means nothing.
Now, don't just read this post, read it, apply it and make it your own Superpower! 😁 💪 🏆
